Being leaderful

Following on from our July newsletter, Inspiring Communities uses the term “leaderful communities” to describe what we want to see in New Zealand – local leadership being drawn from every corner of our communities. The term was coined by Dr. Joseph A. Raelin, a US professor and management consultant in his 2003 book: Creating Leaderful Organizations: How to Bring Out Leadership in Everyone (Berrett‐Koehler, San Francisco).

The key concepts, including his four C’s of leadership (Concurrent, Collective, Collaborative and Compassionate) are covered in his article ‘The Leaderful Community’, and you can find more of Dr. Raelin’s resources at the Leaderful Institute website. This website is a collaborative venture of The Boston Consortium for Higher Education (TBC) in conjunction with Dr. Raelin and a number of other highly talented associates of TBC, all of whom have benefitted from the application of leaderful ways of working.  “Developmental action learning” is a key method they espouse and practice, and they are committed to learning through reflective practice and dialogue.
