Ian Leader, National Manager

Originally from south-east England, Ian has worked in and with the community for the best part of 20 years. Having left school wanting to be a rock and roll star, his career has spanned various fields including child and youth development, volunteer management, social enterprise and the disability sector. Forced into a more permanent working situation by a mortgage, children and declining hairline, for the last decade he has specialised in corporate citizenship, community investment, cross-sector collaboration and neighbourhood regeneration and renewal.

Ian has been interested in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) since his time with Auckland City’s Community Development team in the late 1990’s.  Following this came roles in business, education and the community including Westpac NZ’s Community Engagement Manager, AUT University’s Community Relations Manager, United Way NZ’s Director of Employee Volunteering and Waitakere City’s Partnerships and Advocacy Leader Youth and Children.

As Inspiring Communities’ National Manager, Ian gets to incorporate all the best bits of his previous roles and follow his passions at work.

I've spent most of my working life with Waitakere City Council, an early adopter of interagency working which has been at the forefront of local government led wellbeing collaboration in New Zealand.  My role from the mid 1990s was to facilitate and broker both sector based government and community sector partnerships and also broader citywide processes for "joining up".

From 2002-04, I was the co-leader of the Waitakere arm of the "Strengthening Communities through Local Partnerships" Research Project. This research focused on the development of social sector partnerships  in Waitakere and changes required to make 'partnering' more sustainable, both in Waitakere and throughout New Zealand as a whole. I've also worked with the Department of Internal Affairs to produce practical partnering tools and resources for those working at the collaboration coalface.

altI'm originally from "the far south". My passion for being involved in community led development started with youth politics in Wellington and led to roles in the non government sector at a national level at the beginning of my working life. Since then, community led approaches have been a constant thread through my paid work in both development and management roles in local and central government and the community sector, through adult teaching and consultancy roles, and through unpaid work and advisory roles at both local and national levels.
